Do you want to be more positive
Do you want to be mora positiveDo you want to be more positiveIs the world getting better orworse?2017 was considered the worst year ever until 2018 came along. We will probably think the same of 2019.So, when asurveyasked people if they thought the world was getting better or worse, the results were unsurprisingly devastating. Hardly anyone has a positive outlook - only 10% in Sweden and 6% in the US believe the world is in better shape than it was.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe late Swedish academicHans Roslingwas concerned about this distortion - statical facts offer a different, more positive view. But, the constant news reports on violence, natural catastrophes, terrorist attacks, and wars tint ur vision. As Hans Rosling said, Theres no room for facts when ur minds are occupied by fear.Maybe its not reality that is broken - what we need is a new lens. The bright and d ark sides of perceptionThe worlds been coming to an end for a long time. The hundred years war was supposed to erase humanity from the face of the earth, seven centuries ago. People thought the same about World War I. And then came World War II. Something similar happened with pandemics - from the Bubonic Plague to Cholera, to AIDS, each outbreak was perceived as the worst ever.As Franklin Pierce Adams pointed out, Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a badeanstalt memory. We have a distorted lens when it comes to assessing reality. Optimistic and pessimistic people landsee the world as something static - its either perfect or broken.Extreme pessimism can turn into fatalism - we feel powerless observing how the world is going down. Even worse, thinking that institutions are broken can lead to radicalism - people want to take action in their hands, and drain the swamp.Optimism cancloud ur self-awareness too - it makes us believe we are better than we actually are . Extreme positivism makes us ignore basic facts or underestimate risks. It leads to poor decision making or inaction. As Mahatma Gandhi said, A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes. In the bookFactfulness, Hans Rosling et al. debunk the fatalist myth they prove that the world is becoming better and better. As they explain on their website, they are on a mission to challenge our negative views with facts and data.We are born with a craving, not just for fat and sugar, but also for drama. We get bored when nothing terrible happens - dramatic stories feel more interesting. The problem is that our craving for drama distorts our perception. When we let bad stories pile up, we end thinking the world is getting worse.Multiple statisticsshow that in the past 23 centuries the world has become better and better. Life expectancy continues to rise, child mortality continues to drop, and more people are living in democracies. Progress is not just limited to develope d countries but across the board. The world we live in is not perfect, but its not getting worse as most of us think.Borrow a newlensOur memory clouds our perspective. By using mental shortcuts - theavailability heuristic - werely on immediate examples that come to our mind when evaluating information or making a decision. The easier it is to recall something from memory, the more probable we judge it to be.As George Orwell said, Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.Both pessimistic and optimistic people use a binary lens. They appreciate the world in black or white terms - they either see whats right or whats broken. But improving our views requires more than identifying faulty beliefs - we must borrow a new glass. As Donald Robertson, the author ofHow to Think Like a Roman Emperor, explains, therapy approaches have moved from coaching people to identify faulty beliefs to encouraging the m to try a new lens.In thisexciting interviewwith Daily Stoic, Robertson shares what he discovered in his therapy practice. Early on, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) placed a lot of emphasis on identifying ones incorrect beliefs - people had to question those and replace them with more healthy and rational ways of thinking. The next generation of therapists realized that changing our beliefs, not only is difficult, but not necessary. What matters is changing our relationship with life events - we must learn to use a new lens. The world cannot be understood without numbers. But the world cannot be understood with numbers alone.? HansRoslingTake our thoughts, for example. We must learn to look at them, not through them. When your thoughts become your lens, your reality becomes foggy, asI wrote here.Defusionis a term coined byAcceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)to describe the ability to separate ourselves from our thoughts. Fusion, on the other hand, is when we let our thoughts distort our vision. The same applies to effective emotion management. Emotional reappraisal - understanding and reframing our emotions - is more effective than suppressing or letting them go wild.Cognitive distancingis a powerful psychological strategy - its about becoming more aware of our thoughts and seeing them from a distance. If you believe the world is either rose-tinted or dark and gloomy, its because of the lenses you use. Distancing from events makes you understand the world is not good or bad - your glasses make it look that way.As Epictetus said, Its not things that upset us but rather our opinions about things.verlottern therapy drew some inspiration from the Stoics.Marcus Aurelius addressed the need to separate our judgments from external events. We must suspend certain value judgments responsible for unhealthy behaviors. When something makes you feel that your life is getting worse, remember Epictetus words - its not things, but the glasses you use, that upset you .Wearing a progress lens will help you understand the world is dynamic, not static - pay attention to whats getting better, not just to whats terrible. It will help you observe the good without being blinded by it either.A progress lens helps us see theevolution - we focus on improving instead of complaining about whats broken.Try the progresslensI have found that intellectuals hate progress. And intellectuals who call themselves progressive really hate progress. - StevenPinkerWe have a hard time accepting the world is getting better. And we are clueless about it.As Steven Pinker explains on hisamazing TED talk, Some intellectuals have responded with fury to my bookEnlightenment Now, saying first how dare he claims that intellectuals hate progress, and second, how dare he claims that there has been progress. The need to dramatize our lives creates an opportunity for others to become oursaviors. Weve turned scientists, leaders, gurus, and the media into heroes. When the world seems about to collapse, experts can save us by providing clarity. But, you dont need others to see life clearly. Wearing a progress lens will provide you with a sense of autonomy - you can focus on improving things without expecting anyone else to save you.Acknowledging progress doesnt mean being nave. Its the ability to compare your current status with where you were before. Its about focusing on the improvement, not on whats missing.Going back to my original questionsIs the world getting better or worse?Steven Pinker arrived at the same conclusion that Hans Rosling did. If we compare statistical facts, the world has become much, much better when it comes to life expectancy, prosperity, health, peace, safety, and more. When we watch the news reporting natural catastrophes or wars fatalities, we immediately think the world is going down the sink. But, facts show us that the world is getting safer. That doesnt mean ignoring tragedies like school shootings in the US or the recent hate crim e in New Zealand. Acknowledging progress is not idealistic or utopian view.We have to trust our human ability to improve if we want humanity to continue making progress.Interestingly enough, most of us are feeling better in spite of our negative outlook about the world. People are feeling happier across the board. In 86 percent of the worlds countries, happiness has increased in recent decades.Acknowledging progress doesnt mean ignoring whats wrong - it energizes us to keep working on getting better and better. Wearing a progress lens will help you integrate all aspects of life by providing a sense of autonomy. Youll see whats broken as a problem to be solved, not as something to feel bad about it.Are you making progress?Life will never be perfect - you can focus on whats broken or acknowledge progress instead.A distorted lens makes us focus on one side the story - we magnify either the negative or the positive. Wearing a progress lens helps us acknowledge our improvement. We kno w some things are wrong, butruminatingsad events or past mistakes doesnt help us move forward. So, which lens do you use to observe your own life?Appreciating the good is not conformism. Its about embracing our dynamic and fluid nature - progress makes us focus on the journey, not just on one particular stop. Personal growth requires understanding that we are not changing but becoming.Try wearing a progress lens. The world is not perfect, but every day its getting better and better. When you feel stuck, remember that.I leave you with one last thought by Steven PinkerWe will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one. But theres no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing.Gustavo Razzettiis a change instigator who helpspurpose-driven organizationscreate positive change. 1 in 5 Americans dont feel safe at work, survey finds1 in 5 Americans dont feel safe at work, survey findsAccording to the new American Working Conditions Survey, many employees in the U.S. dont feel safe or comfortable in their workplaces.Created by the Rand Corp., Harvard Medical School, and the University of California, Los Angeles, the report surveyed mora than 3,000 U.S. workers to help policymakersunderstand whats it like to be an American employee today. What they found is that many of us are stressed and under a variety of external pressures that take a toll.1 in 5 employees have a hostile workplaceOne in five employees surveyed said they were exposed to a hostile or threatening social environment at work, a number the researchers called disturbingly high. More than half of employees said they faced unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions. But not all employees are being exposed to these conditions at the same rate.Researchers found that your likeliness to get harassed split along age, gender, and education lines. Younger women were more likely to experience unwanted sexual attention at work, while younger men without a college degree were more likely to face verbal abuse and humiliating behavior.Perhaps young women recognize these predatory dangers. A separate pollby Morning Consult in partnership with theNew York Timesfound that younger women policed how they interacted with men more than older women did at work. For that poll, self-policing meant younger women would be more likely to turn down off-hours drinking with male co-workers.Taxing demands at workWhen your boss needs that report yesterday, deadlines can be emotionally exhausting to meet. Two-thirds of Americans said they worked tight deadlines, and one in four said that they had too little time to do their job. When you lack the time to complete the job on the clock, it carries over into your personal life. Half of the employees surveyed said they do work in their free time to complete work demands.Getting flexibility at work differed depending on gender, youth, and degrees. Women reported experiencing more difficulty than men in getting time off work to take care of family matters, younger employees had a harder time getting a flexible schedule than older ones, and workers with a college degree said they got more schedule flexibility than those without that degree. There was one bright spot, however. Four out of five workers said they found their work meaningful in some way, whether that meant feeling satisfied or useful or experiencing some sense of personal accomplishment. But overall, what this report shows is that when it comes to the American workplace, theres still a ways to go before its a safe environment for all.

How to Change Careers Without Going Back to School
How to Change Careers Without Going Back to SchoolHow to Change Careers Without Going Back to SchoolIf youre thinking about changing careers, but you dont want to spend the time and money to get a new degree, heres some good news its entirely possible to change careers without going back to school. You just need to assess where you are right now and make some realistic plans for the future. The average person changes jobs 10 to 15 times over the course of their career. The Department of Labor doesnt track how often people change to an entirely new career, however- and the reason why will give you hope for your own career change. In short, the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesnt track career changes because theres no real consensus about what it means to change careers. Why? Because many of these transitions are subtle, gradual shifts, not abrupt leaps into the unknown. You dont need to change your working life entirely, all at once, to embark on a new career path. If you want to make a change, but dont want to spend years paying to do it, these steps will help Talk to People Who Love Their Jobs One of my favorite career change stories is my mothers because it shows how important it is to find your people when looking for the right occupation. She became a registered nurse because she happened to get a secretarial job at a hospital and realized that she felt right at home with the nurses on staff. Sure, the job appealed to her, but she also sensed that she would fit in. Talking to nurses who loved their jobs helped her realize that it was the right path to take. Now, in that case, she had to go back to school. But depending on the job, you can find your fit without extensive retraining. The key is to departure talking to people who love what they do and think about whether youd love it, too. Keep an eye out for these folks in your daily life, at work and after hours, and be prepared to ask them how they got to where they are now. Chances are, theyll be deligh ted to tell you. People who love their careers love talking about them. Set Up Informational Interviews Once youve targeted a new occupation- or narrowed your list down to a few possibilities- its time to set up some informational bewerbungsinterviews. A more formal version of the conversations youve been having with people in your dream career, informational interviews allow you to gather intel on jobs, industries, and employers before taking the plunge. Again, youll likely find that people are eager to talk to you- especially if you make it clear that youre looking for information, not an immediate job. Using your networking connections, make a list of potential interviewees, and then start sending out requests for meetings. Look for Transferable Skills For your next step, look for transferable skills. Skills lists can help. Make a list of the skills required by your current job, and skills required by your target job and then look for the match. Youll probably be surpris ed at how much overlap there is, especially among the soft skills prized by hiring managers. Identify Your Personal Skills Gap- and Fill It Of course, when youre making your lists, youll also notice areas where your current skill set doesnt quite match up to requirements for the new job. Dont despair. There are often free and cheap ways to close the gap. For example, if your target job requires coding skills, you might look into free coding classes online. Get Experience Any Way You Can While some hiring managers may take a chance on you, based on your transferable skills and motivation, youll bolster your case if you can acquire relevant job experience. No worries, though you dont need years of full-time work to show that you know your stuff. Look for opportunities to get experience developing your new skills and/or working in your target field, including freelancing, contract work, and volunteering. The goal is to learn and get something on your resume that speaks to your new career direction. Keep Reassessing As you network and interview and research, keep in mind that nothing is set in stone. Youll learn more about your potential career path as you pursue it. Sometimes, what you learn will validate your previous decisions sometimes, it wont. If you learn something that makes you question your choices, listen to your gut. Youre not committed to one course, just because youve started in that direction. Learning what you dont want to do is just as valuable as learning what you do want to do. Take that information and consider whether its time to change course.

At the exact same time, it offers a means to highlight your accomplishments. If youre not a student and have more relevant work experience, you wont be trying hard to fill space and it might be more beneficial to concentrate on other regions of your resume.

Why a Speedy Hiring Process is Key for Startups - Spark Hire
Why a Speedy Hiring Process is Key for Startups - Spark HireBringing the right people on board has a major impact on the future success of a startup, as this kind of environment is typically one where employees fill several roles. While you want to make a careful decision when it comes to filling an open spot within your business, taking too long to hire can actually be detrimental. Heres why slow hiring is problematic for fledgling businessesCandidates who are in top demand typically wont wait to get an offer from youYou want to acquire the best talent possible in order to help drive your company forward. However, if you have to wait weeks or months to make an offer to an individual, its likely that this part will already have received an offer elsewhere. When its your turn, theyll no longer be available, leaving you with a pool of less desirable candidates. Over time, this can bring down the level of talent found in your office.Taking longer to hire doesnt necessarily guarantee tha t youll make smarter choicesWhile it may feel like taking time to carefully evaluate each candidate ensures that youre getting a capable, positive employee, in reality this is not always the case. Candidates who interview well may not turn out to perform as you had hoped. Those who receive glowing recommendations from past supervisors may not actually deserve the level of praise heaped upon them. You can research a candidate for months and still end up making a bad hire. For these reasons, its best to gather as much information as possible and then act, rather than driving yourself crazy worrying about whether youre making the right choice. You stretch other employees too thin when lokalitts are left vacantIn a startup environment, one employee often fills several roles. Therefore, when someone leaves and a position is left open, its easy for the employees who remain to become overwhelmed as they try to handle their jobs while picking up the slack caused by the departure. Protect you r current employees sanity by filling open roles quickly and ensuring that no one person is taking on too much.In addition to these concerns, if it takes you months to make a hiring decision, potential employees may become hesitant to work for you. Theyll feel that if youre paralyzed when it comes to making one choice, how will you be when it comes to making other decisions regarding your business? Hiring in a careful yet speedy way is an important part of protecting the health and future success of your company, particularly when your business is new to the market.Image pressmaster/BigStock.com
